What the Foresight Book Description:

Designers, futurists, and innovators of all kind often apply the long view toward businesses and the world at large; but how often do we apply this perspective to our personal lives? Alida Draudt and Julia Rose West have taken the complex tools of foresight and distilled them to their simplest forms in order to tackle this challenge. Together they have written a workbook that focuses on ten-minute mini workshops around personal futures - introducing not only foresight, but the idea of multiple potential futures to the realm of the individual. This workbook will give you a few tools to shift the long view from business-oriented to highly personal. "Finally, methodologies leveraged by leading strategic foresight practitioners have been made accessible. If there is one thing to takeaway from What the Foresight, it's this: the future is for everyone. In the book, authors Alida Draudt and Julia West brilliantly break down the guiding principles of futures work in an easy to understand set of materials and activities that anyone can use to imagine their own futures. Read this book! The future is a cause worth fighting for." - Matthew Manos, Founder and Managing Director of verynice. Creator of Models of Impact, author of Toward Preemptive Social Enterprise, and author of How to Give Half of Your Work Away for Free "What the Foresight is one of those rare feats - it is well informed, easy to understand and broadly applicable. If you're looking to take that first step into futures thinking here's your road map." - Brian David Johnson, Futurist and author of Science Fiction Prototyping "Going through the exercises in What the Foresight helps you envision multiple possible futures and then choose the path that suits you best. It's a imaginative and useful tool for anyone who wants to expand their options and explore more paths." - Christopher Ireland, Co-author of Rise of the DEO "Foresight is an emerging skill that is becoming more visible and more common around the world - that is, among adults. Young people are not yet included in the discussion of the future these days, and it's their future more than ours! Almost no schools teach students how to anticipate and influence change, much less about the plausible futures that await them later in life. Now Draudt and West have provided us with What the Foresight, a clever, beautifully designed approach to the future for young and old alike. Thank you!" - Peter C. Bishop, Ph.D. Executive Director of Teach the Future, Inc. and co-author of Thinking About the Future

The Foresight of Dark Knowing Book Description:

Korea has long had an underground insurrectionary literature. The best-known example of the genre is the Chŏng Kam nok, a collection of premodern texts predicting the overthrow of the Yi Dynasty (1392–1910) that in recent times has been invoked by a wide range of groups to support various causes and agendas: from leaders of Korea’s new religious movements formed during and after the Japanese occupation to spin doctors in the South Korean elections of the 1990s to proponents of an aborted attempt to move the capital from Seoul in the early 2000s. Written to inspire uprisings and foment dissatisfaction, the Chŏng Kam nok texts are anonymous and undated. (Most were probably written between the seventeenth and late nineteenth centuries.) In his expansive introduction to this first English translation, John Jorgensen notes that the work employs forms or codes of political prediction (Ch. tuch’en; Kor. toch’am) allied with Chinese geomancy (fengshui) but in a combination unique to Korea. The two types of codes appear to deal with different subjects—the potency of geographical locations and political predictions derived from numerological cycles, omens, and symbols—but both emerge from a similar intellectual sphere of prognostication arts that includes divination, the Yijing (Book of Changes), physiognomy, and astrology in early China, and both share theoretical components, such as the fluctuation of ki (Ch. qi). In addition to ambiguous and obscure passages, allusion and indirection abound; many predictions are attributed to famous people in the distant past or made after the fact to lend the final outcome an air of authority. Jorgensen’s invaluable introduction contains a wealth of background on the history and techniques of political prediction, augury, and geomancy from the first-century Han dynasty in China to the end of the nineteenth century in Korea, providing readers with a thorough account of East Asian geomancy based on original sources. This volume will be welcomed by students and scholars of premodern Korean history and beliefs and those with an interest in early, arcane sources of political disinformation that remain relevant in South Korea to this day.

Recent Developments in Foresight Methodologies Book Description:

Foresight is an area within Futures Studies that focuses on critical thinking concerning long term developments, whether within the public sector or in industry and management, and is something of a sub-section of complexity and network science. This book examines developments in foresight methodologies and relates in its greater part to the work done in the context of the COSTA22 network of the EU on Foresight Methodologies. Foresight is a professional practice that supports significant decisions, and as such it needs to be more assured of its claims to knowledge (methodology). Foresight is practiced across many domains and is not the preserve of specialized ‘futurists’, or indeed of foresight specialists. However, the disciplines of foresight are not well articulated or disseminated across domains, leading to re-inventions and practice that does not make best use of experience in other domains. The methodological development of foresight is an important task that aims at strengthening the pool of the tools available for application, thereby empowering the actors involved in foresight practice. Elaborating further on methodological issues, such as those presented in the present book, enables the actors involved in foresight to begin to critique current practice from this perspective and, thirdly, to begin to design foresight practice. The present trends towards methodological concerns indicates a move from ‘given’ expert-predicted futures to one in which futures are nurtured through a dialogue among “stakeholders.” The book has four parts, each elaborating on a set of aspects of foresight methodologies. After an introductory section, Part II considers theorizing about foresight methodologies. Part III covers system content issues, and Part IV presents foresight tools and approaches.

Corporate Foresight Book Description:

The world changes like the patterns in a kaleidoscope: trends expand, contract, break up, melt, disintegrate and disappear, while others are formed. Change – as opposed to stasis - is our normal condition, the only certainty in our lives. Hence the need to create tools that provide organizations with the means to tackle change and navigate complexity. We must accept the reality of constant change and be prepared to a heavy shift in perspective: interconnection versus separation, acceleration versus linearity, discontinuity versus continuity. Anticipating the future requires more than the traditional predictive models (forecasting) based on the forward projection of past experiences. Advanced methods use anticipation logic (foresight) and build probable scenarios taking into account weak signals, emerging trends, coexisting presents and potential paths of evolution. Corporate foresight is fundamental to interpret and lead change. The two cornerstones of foresight are organization and management. As concerns organization, the authors advocate the separation of Research (oriented to the market of tomorrow) from Development (oriented to the market of today), the establishment of a Foresight unit and the concentration of research activities mainly on the acquisition and recombination of external know-how. As regards management, after an overview of state-of-the-art literature on forecasting methods, the authors propose the implementation of a "future coverage" methodology, which enables companies to measure and verify the consistency between trends, strategic vision and offered products. These organizational and managing tools are then tested in a case study: the Italian company Eurotech SpA, a leader in the ICT sector.
