Soldier Boy Book Description:

Blood and anger, bragging and pain, are all part of this young Iowa soldier's vigorous words about war and soldiering. A twenty-year-old farmer from Council Bluffs, Charles O. Musser was one of the 76,000 Iowans who enlisted to wear the blue uniform. He was a prolific writer, penning at least 130 letters home during his term of service with the 29th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Soldier Boy makes a significant contribution to the literature of the common soldier in the Civil War. Moreover, it takes a rare look at the Trans-Mississippi theater, which has traditionally been undervalued by historians. Always Musser dutifully wrote and mailed his letters home. With a commendable eye for historical detail, he told of battles and marches, guerrilla and siege warfare, camp life and garrison soldiering, morale and patriotism, Copperheads and contraband, and Lincoln's reelection and assassination, creating a remarkable account of activities in this almost forgotten backwater of the war.

Soldier Boy Book Description:

Eugene McBride Swaggart was born in 1840 in Salem Township, Illinois. He was a farm boy, and when war broke out between the northern and southern states he enlisted in the 92nd Illinois Infantry. The author has documented the history of the 92nd Illinois with the help of a number of Civil War resources. This historical narrative provides the background for the family letters, which present a more personal view of the war. This book follows Swaggart and the 92nd from his enlistment in 1862 through Kentucky and Tennessee, then to Chickamauga, Alabama, Atlanta, Savannah and "the Carolina Mud March." Numerous names affiliated with the family are mentioned throughout, as are the names of many famous Civil War figures. The letters reprinted here were written by Eugene McBride Swaggart, Henry Holt, Henry Lego, Elvira Van Alstine/Swaggart, Amanda Ludisky Van Alstine/Swaggart, Jennie Van Alstine, Anna Swaggart, Mary Ann Miller, S. Whitman Dodge, Maria Van Alstine and Mary Crosit. A full-name index is included, along with a separate subject index. A glossary is provided to help clarify the meaning of the terminology used during the war. Illustrations include facsimiles of many of the letters, as well as family documents and other Civil War ephemera.

Soldier Boy Book Description:

In 1962 when Tim Bazzett graduated from high school he'd had enough of academia and classroom drudgery, so he joined the army - and received an education he'd never imagined. Perhaps one of the most unlikely and inept citizen-soldiers since Gomer Pyle, Tim somehow survives the terrors and tribulations of basic training at "Fort Lost-in-the-Woods, Misery," and after further training in the mysteries of Morse code in Massachusetts and Maryland, the small-town innocent is launched overseas and into the larger world. In northern Turkey he finds himself a link in the outermost defenses of America during a Cold War he only imperfectly understands. There he sees poverty and hatred in the faces of children and is forced to confront his own faults and inner demons. Later on in Germany, no longer quite so innocent, he chases girls and dreams of being a rock star. But at the heart of Bazzett's narrative are the characters - the friends he makes along the way. For this is ultimately a book about friendship - and about growing up. In his first volume of memoirs, Bazzett made his Michigan hometown in the fifties come alive for all his readers. In Soldier Boy, his military experiences are made just as real. Get ready to laugh, and maybe cry a little too, as the irrepressible Reed City Boy rides again.

Soldier Boy Book Description:

Tom Blaine, the son of poor coal miners, sees his life with a vision unclouded by coal dust. His intelligence is his key for a better future in his home in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Pennsylvania. Instead of following his father and older brother down the mine shafts, he opts for a life surrounded by love. His heart belongs to Nola, the daughter of the local grocer, and his working hours are spent in her family’s grocery store. Life in a coal mining community is filled with uncertainty, suffering, and too-frequent tragedy. His own mother had to abandon her dreams of becoming a teacher, lacking the funds to get an education. Tom’s life is tainted by bullies and narrow-minded neighbors, but he is still determined to rise above the odds to build a better life for himself and his lady love. As the nation is pulled into World War II, Tom follows his instincts to protect all that he loves. He enlists and heads into the bloody fields of battle. Life on the battlefield is a shock to the small-town boy from Pennsylvania, but he does his best, relying on his wits and natural physical abilities to survive. Even on the front line, he uses his natural gifts to bring optimism and humor to an indescribably difficult experience. But are those gifts enough to return him to his wife’s loving arms?

Soldier Boy Book Description:

In the jungles of Vietnam, First Lieutenant Stu Willis met Private Richmond Patterson and fell hard for the new recruit. Their brief romance burned bright, but the very war that brought them together finally tore them apart. This isn't the happy-ever-after you're looking for, but it is one of the best stories I've written to date. So consider yourself warned.
